Achilles Hilmi
Acoustic, Bass, Electric, Vocal

Achilles started playing guitar at the age of 11, when he got tired of his recorder and kept pestering his parents for an instrument that his favourite rock stars played! After a few years studying classical guitar, his long held desire to play the electric lead him to seek out a rock guitar teacher. Based in his native home of Athens, Greece, the lack of contemporary guitar tutors available meant that he had to continue on his own with the help of the odd book!

After performing in various bands, his determination to pursue a professional career in music prompted a move to the UK. Therein followed a spell at London's Guitar Institute, earning the `Student Of The Year' award. Following this, he went on to earn an HND in Popular Music Singing from Vocaltech, to feed his other passion, while also sneaking in to all the guitarists' classes! On top of being a vocalist and a guitarist, Achilles also plays Bass, Keyboards, Drums and recently started learning the Shakuhachi (Japanese flute).

Achilles has been teaching music since 2001, and has been teaching both vocals and guitar at SEMS for the last 8 years. While he specialises in Rock and Metal guitar techniques, he is a versatile player able to accomodate many styles, from Classical and Folk to Funk and Jazz.

His vocal tuition programme caters for a wide range of contemporary styles, always with the emphasis on vocal exercises, correct techniques and assistance with repertoire being the main stay of the lesson plan. Achilles has also worked with many students on audition preparation for theatre and college entrance.

He has a practical approach to teaching, incorporating music theory and technique in an easily accessible and relevant way, tailored to fit each student's requirements.

When not teaching, Achilles can be found making music with his numerous bands and musical projects of which there are many!

Andrea Ghidoni
Piano & Keyboard

Born in Milan, Italy in 1980, Andrea has been raised in a musical family. He has come in contact with different instruments since he was born as his father plays clarinet and saxophone, but the one that really attracted his attention was the electronic organ, where Andrea learned to play by ear as well as read music by himself whilst he was still in primary school.

Since then music has played a considerable part in his life, a passion that accompanied him in his formative years in Milan, Rome and now here in the UK.  Despite a strict classical upbringing in the discipline of Piano during his study years, Andrea developed an interest for other “sounds” and is very open to listening to and playing/experimenting with different styles and genres.

Andrea ensures that he incorporates within his teaching programme, pieces and music styles that his students propose, and to introduce improvisation and composition too.

Andrea thoroughly enjoys passing on not only his knowledge, but especially his passion for music, and finds teaching an extremely rewarding career.  Whilst he is happy to adapt his lessons to students needs and tastes, from young children to mature players, and to those who wish to play purely for fun, he is equally keen for his students who wish to, to acknowledge their own advancements and recognise their achievements by preparing them for graded examinations.  But he is convinced that this process should still be enjoyable and satisfying, with the main objective to develop individuals musical awareness to enrich their lives....

Kat Milner (VIOLIN)
Piano & Keyboard, Vocal, Theory

Kat started playing the Violin at age 7, and has hardly put it down since! She showed from the earliest stages an open-minded passion for all facets of the instrument.

Having studied at the Berkshire Young Musicians Trust Scholarship Scheme, where she also learned voice and piano, she commenced, at the age of 19 a certificate in higher education and music, later graduating with Honours when gaining her music degree. Having previously established and run her own nationally accredited scuba diving business, she has since opted for the relatively sedate surroundings of classroom tuition within independent schools and colleges, with her most recently appointment being here at South End Music School.

Although Kat’s training was focused very much on classical music, she enjoys all types of violin playing, including orchestral and small ensemble work, plus playing electric violin with indie-rock band Brassneck. This broad minded approach has given Kat a wide range of experiences, having played in every situation from the orchestral pit to backing strings for acts such as Robbie Williams on Top of the Pops.

Her ensemble work has allowed her to perform in some fantastic venues, including the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and St Johns, Smiths Square. Through her small ensemble work she has acquired and honed the ability to arrange music for different combinations of string instruments, in addition to her own compositional work.

Kat currently teaches music to GCSE and A-Level, also gaining teaching experience in Btec music. Her expertise extends beyond that of her principal instrument to instruction in Classical Voice, Music Theory to Grade 8,  and also Piano for beginners. Her tutoring approach is based on a combination of formal classical tuition, including ABRSM graded exams, and a more relaxed teaching program in a broad range of styles and genres.

Most strongly she feels that music and learning are to be enjoyed, and her teaching style certainly reflects this.
